Nighttime roadway work: how to position the lighting
On a roadway construction site, light has two jobs: letting the crew see the jobsite and letting drivers see the work zone without being blinded. Three decisions take care of it.
Placement
Place the towers inside the closed-off zone, behind the signage and out of the traffic flow. A cordless unit avoids cable runs crossing the work area or the lane.
Direction
Aim the light toward the jobsite and in the same direction traffic is moving. Lighting toward oncoming drivers reduces their visibility right where they need it most.
Coverage
Several distributed sources are better than a single very powerful one: they reduce shadows between machinery and personnel. The number of units depends on the area and the type of work.
